| |

Cusco, or often pronounced Cuzco, is one of the most essential Peruvian cities that’s an unavoidable destination for every traveler. The reason? A sacred historical site Machu Picchu along with Sacred Valley, is located in the surrounding Andes. The majority of travelers stay in Cusco only for a tiny period until their departure to Machu Picchu, but we find this colonial and historical city very interesting. From radiant coffee and chocolate culture, colorful colonial architecture, traditional food, all the way to historical sites, and extra potent cannabis – Cusco has it all! Let’s join us on the journey of exploring the hidden treasures of Cusco and find out where to find the best weed in Cusco.

Where to Get Weed in Cusco?

Avoid getting cannabis from shady street dealers.

Cannabis isn’t the ‘drug’ of choice in Cusco. The majority of people enjoy their traditional and natural medicine coca leaves or ayahuasca. The funny fact is that almost every hotel will offer a free coca tea for its visitors since it’s a proven remedy for altitude sickness. If you’re looking for some portable snack, head over to any local food market, and you’ll be able to find locals are selling bags of coca leaves for as low as $0.50 – $1 per pack.

The best advice when it comes to buying weed in Cusco is to avoid buying from shady street dealers. Here are a few restaurants/bars where you can try your luck:

  • Rasta Bar – chilled atmosphere, reggae music, pool tables, affordable Peruvian cuisine.
  • Ukukus Bar – live music, great selection of drinks, dance floor, beautiful art, and overall lovely people.
  • Loki Cusco Hostel – a very sociable hostel with tons of activities, sauna, and gym.
  • Taxi drivers for good leads, but be very cautious. We have met a guy in our hostel who’ve scored a sweet deal from a taxi driver.

We can’t say for the average price of weed in Cusco, but we’ve bought twice for a bit more than $1 per gram. The quality wasn’t the best, but it was an excellent smoke session to socialize with other travelers. For a cigarette sized bag, expect to pay from $6 – $10. Everything else is a rip-off.

Is Cannabis Legal in Peru?

weed legalization in cusco

If you’re a tourist traveling around Peru who’s looking to get blazed, then we have stunning news for you! The possession of fewer than 8 grams isn’t punishable by law and is entirely legal. The government passed the bill, specifically ‘Article 299’, that goes in detail when it comes to possession of conventional drugs.

Read official legislation on drugs and the prison situation in Peru to get a better understanding of laws, problems, and corruption in the country.

We did a comprehensive read of the ‘article’, and there are some absurd and misleading laws. For instance, you can legally carry up to 250 mg of ecstasy (MDMA base), 1 g of opium, or up to 5 g of cocaine paste. Imagine that! There is the catch, so don’t get too excited too soon…

You shouldn’t carry more than one controlled substance from the list stated in the ‘article’. If you get caught carrying 2 or more substances from the list, no matter the quantities, you’ll get prosecuted and potentially get in real trouble with authorities.

Since Peruvian authorities and police aren’t known for low corruption levels, it’s not uncommon that locals and tourists end up in a police station even if they got caught with a legal amount. Why is that? Well, the police sometimes arrest people with the suspicion of further trafficking, and if that happens, you should be prepared for some unpleasant time in the station.

On the other hand, having more than 8 grams on you might potentially result in a prosecution that can lead to 5 to 15 years in a Peruvian prison. The authorities are pretty corrupt (101st country in the world), and it’s better not to play with the system.

Just keep in mind to have small quantities with you (less than 8 grams) and don’t have two different substances at the same time. Also, avoid smoking in public and selling weed to people, and you’ll be fine.

Enjoy your stay in Cusco! If you have any questions related to things to do or places to stay, please hit us up. Cheers! 🙂
